Billl , this article coincides with some things I was told by the Cuban doctors I had in here. I made a nice friendship with them, specially with the head of the delegation ( He was the Comisario Politico, The watch dog )
who after being reclusive for a few weeks opened up ( Might be the Stockholm syndrome) and we used to have long chats on many subjects . one of them was related to the Venezuelan citizens with traumatism , spinal injuries and spinal birth defects, they were sent to Cuba for treatment, Chavez used to tell the Venezuelan people that he was EXTREMELY grateful to Castro for this human help to Venezuela , the opposition found out that we paid in hard currency, and the families of the benefited patients had to raise more money in order to pay for the expenses of the accompanying family member ( a very high cost ) the Cuban Drs. . were a bit upset, they told me that Cubans had to wait months and years for this treatment, and there was a selection based on Age , Political Contacts, and how useful the person was, the elders and retarded were hardly able to get the treatment ( does it ring a bell ?) I was told the bitterness they had because even as Drs. they were hardly able to get certain services and even to buy some goods that were reserved only to high ranking party members and foreigners.

Another problem was that there were to many Drs. ( they said the highest percentage in the World) and many were jobless, or wrwere doing odd jobs or just sent aboard for humanitarian help, but they weren't paid and the government was paid for them in $$.

The worst thing I noticed about them was::
All those Cuban Drs. went back to Cuba with a few Gold Chains each, Gold Rings, Bracelets . Watches, Washing and drying machines, Walkman and many other electronics each. How did they get to have all that?
They were professional beggars, they were not ashamed to ask, beg or just insinuate a payment from every one they knew or treated, The Venezuelan peasants in this sector of Venezuela are black descendants from the slaves in the local haciendas, it is one of the poorest sectors in Venezuela, but those poor peasants used to give the Cubans : money, presents, food, etc., not out of gratitude but out of pithiness, some times I did feel disgusted when I watched employees of mine and poor peasants coming to the Resort to bring the Cubans gold Jewelry and the Drs. would keep asking for things.

Castro made many bad things but I think that some of the worst he did was to convert Cubans into beggars stealing away the pride and self esteem, so we have at least two very important things they lost..SELF ESTEEM- PRIDE and FREEDOM

and what about the widespread prostitution

So what's the benefit of Cuba having a US compliant regime and obtaining US development assistance?
