If the holder had spiked the ball, since it was on a long snap, the Giants would have been called for intentional grounding, a 15 yard penalty with loss of down. It would have taken them out of field goal range. Worse, however, is that a penalty on the offense in that situation would have resulted in the clock being run down to zero, since a penalty in the last minute on the offense that stops the clock when it otherwise would not have been stopped results in 30 seconds being run off.

What the holder should have done is take a knee and immediately call time out. The Giants had one TO left.
