Lizzie, I arrived at the same conclusion as you when I looked to upgrade my 3 year old Pentium II. I ended up buying a new Dell 4550 for $1056, which included a 15 inch flat screen and a 3 year on-site warranty (no sales tax or shipping either). The annual cost difference is peanuts, especially when you spend as much time on the net as we do and now you have a new warranty.

Decision sort of reminds me of an ex-neighbor who was quizzing me about spending an additional $150 or so to really upgrade a new mattress purchase. Since we spend 1/3 of our life in bed, I think I would choose to spend the extra $150.

Interesting experiment, prompted by my partner's recent upgrading attempt on one of his boxes. I went to Fry's and priced off-the-shelf software identical to what is bundled with a Dell desktop. The desktop I looked at on Dell's site priced out at about $900, shipping and all; not the cheapest, and certainly a powerful box.

What I found is, the machine (hardware) is basically free these days. So there is indeed no reason to buy pieces of hardware to upgrade existing machines, especially if any software needs to be included to make it all work.

I know OEMs are getting great deals on software licenses, and that's what helps them out. Since I don't get those cheap licenses, only what discounts I can get at Fry's (or over the Web), it's only prudent that I consider buying a new machine loaded with what I want. The hardware's free, if I look at it all from the software cost perspective.

And no hassles trying to make it all work; no opening the case, no nothing.

So my next purchases will all be new machines; I'm buying them for the software, you see...
