There are 80 universities and colleges in Shanghai. There are over 100 in Beijing. People here put the education of their children above all else. I met a shopkeeper in Guangzhou. He and his wife own and run the store which sells the typical range of things you find at a corner store. There are hundreds of thousands of similar stores arround the country. They saved enough money to send their oldest son to universty in the US. If he can get an entry visa he will go for his education at a price of about $50,000 -- not bad for a couple with no education. It will take everything they have. And he will need to support them later in life. The more recent trend has been to stay home because Chinese universities are improving -- but US university education still ranks as the best in the world.
