Asian handset makers poised for success over European vendors, says Probe Research

Japanese handset manufacturers are in a position to claim a much larger market share with their camera phones and other terminals designed for image display, according to a report from telecom analyst firm Probe Research.

The unexpected success of text messaging has naturally led companies to seek ways to expand the market and continue sales growth with new services such as multimedia messaging service (MMS) to deliver images to handsets.

"European carriers who have invested in MMS infrastructure are now desperate to put cameras into subscribers' hands," said David Chamberlain, author of the new report. "While European and the US vendors were producing handsets offering only voice and SMS, Japanese and Korean companies used the past couple years to develop a thick portfolio of mature imaging terminals. Those new handsets suddenly look very attractive to wireless carriers needing to entice users to use their new networks and MMS systems."

According to Chamberlain, Japan's reliance on mobile handsets for Internet access has driven much of the technology innovation behind the delivery of images to mobile terminals.

"Asian vendors have significantly more experience and their handsets are a perfect fit for carriers as they launch new services," noted Chamberlain.

Chamberlain cited a recent Vodafone order for 400,000 terminals from Sharp as highlighting the vulnerability of Nokia , Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and other manufacturers.

However, the slowest and most expensive part of the introduction of advanced messaging in the European market - establishing a sufficient number of peers with whom customers can exchange messages - will be at the heart of commercial success and is ultimately in the hands of the wireless carriers, Probe says.
