I agree with you totally on this. This is why I believe the Jewish claims of "We were there first" are not any better than their "God gave this land to us".

It's no different than Palestinians saying the Jews "took" the land from their ancestors, when it was pretty obvious that any such land claims were dubious to begin with, as well as the fact that they voluntarily sold it to the Jews.

But of course, what happened in 1948 and beyond is a question of obtaining land by defensive conquest against aggressing nations.

The bottom line is that the Israelis are there and they aren't going away. Thus, there are only two ways for the Palestinians to win a state of their own..

Negotiate peacefully for one that the Israelis can tolerate..

Or...

Take it by force (military or political)..

And that's why I say that all of this history of who has the right to live there is irrelevant. We're beyond history that occurred 50 years ago.. They have to have the courage to deal with one another in a mutually beneficial manner in order for both sides to achieve a compromise and obtain at least part of what they each want..
