Canada to double diamond output

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRUSSELS Canada would double its diamond production to become a top player in the global market, International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew said yesterday.
Pettigrew also reiterated Ottawa's support for the Kimberley Process, clamping down on "conflict diamonds" that have notably bankrolled wars in Africa.

Canada, which increasingly mines diamonds in the Northwest Territories near the Arctic Circle, is the world's sixthbiggest diamond exporter. "But we hope to move up to third place."

The world's biggest diamond producers include SA, Botswana, Australia and Russia.

Pettigrew said he planned to discuss the Kimberley Process certification scheme, which came into force this month, with industry figures in Antwerp, where 80% of the world's diamonds are traded.

Pettigrew underlined the importance of the growing diamond industry to Canada's far north.

"It creates jobs of high quality in places where it's difficult to create jobs because of its remoteness." Sapa-AFP
