I believe there is some confusion as to how 1xEV-DO operates and perhaps CDMA in general. The concept of one user "tying up" a channel is absurd. The example given where a user occupies a channel for a millisecond illustrates how TDMA works. In a CDMA system, multiple users are sending data simultaneously with each user having a code assigned. This is true whether the channel is allocated for voice or for data.

In 1xEV-DO, a 1.25 MHz channel is dedicated to data only. However, by definition, this channel is used by multiple users simultaneously. Given the high efficiency of how CDMA does data, particularly with EV-DO, this actually increases bandwidth. Remaining channels can then be dedicated to voice only using 1xRTT.

The comment that one user would have 100% of a channel's capacity if no one else were using it is a bit of stretch. Why would such a system be built if demand were so low? In reality, EV-DO delivers high data rates on a loaded channel. I don't know what number of users constitutes "loaded."

Also, I believe the channels can be dynamically assigned as demand increases.

I'm not a tech type but I'm sure there are those here who will correct me if I'm wrong.

What's the fuss about this one user a time thing? A question, anybody understand how does LAN work? How about ethernet, or token ring, how about your backhaul T1 T3 or Twhatever connection you can think about? How about the bus on your computer? Do you think the data is sent or received simultaneously from multiple users or one at a time? Or how about your micro-processor? Do you think multi-threads or multi-processes is really multi-at the same time or just time slicing on each one?

Again, what's the big deal here if everybody else is one at a time here?

... but evidently Qualcomm decided that a "data only" rose sounded a bit mundane.

What the heck. They developed the technology so they are entitled to label it any way they would like to.

It beats EV phase 1 (which was how it was referred to in the original requirements document with EV phase 2 adding integrated voice in that document).

The following text is from a KTF press release issued in December, 2001 and it kind of describes the "evolution" of EVolution (Data Optimized and/or Data only).

1x EV-DO was selected last October, 2000 under the name of 1x EV DO (Evolution Data Only) at the synchronous international standardization association (3GPP2) as the official technology standard. ... cdma2000 1xEV-DO is a "high-speed wireless data communication technology that evolved from cdma2000 1x" which was first invented by Qualcomm Inc. in 1999, under the name of HDR (High Data Rate). Last October, it was selected as the third generation mobile communication(IMT-2000) official technology standard with the name cdma2000 High Rate Packet Data Air Interface Specification by the synchronous international standardization association (3GPP2). It is called "cdma2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized)" by its developer Qualcomm.

Personally, I think that the following excerpts from Qualcomm's 1x EVolution whitepaper which was last updated in November 2001 pretty well describe data only EV-DO.

The recommended capabilities of the cdma2000 standard includes two interoperable modes: an integrated 1x mode optimized for voice and medium data speeds, and a 1xEV mode optimized for high capacity/high speed data and Internet access. ... 1xEV systems are designed to be highly interoperable with CDMA systems. ... With that in mind, the 1xEV design requires a separate CDMA carrier. ... Within a given network, dual-mode IS-95/1x and 1xEV devices allow
users to access voice services via the IS-95/1x frequency carrier, while receiving data services through the 1xEV frequency carrier.

Mundane though "Data Only" may be, CDG just recently (and it was about time) completely updated the "Technology" section of their website and now instead of referring to 1xEV phase 1 they refer to as "CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Data Only)" and what they used to call 1xEV phase 2 they now call "CDMA2000 1xEV-DV (Data Voice)."
