McLean's lyric was a reference to Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day". Holly's song was meant ironically, and so was McLean's, but in a different sense of course.

The ad works for the target market, IMO. Gen Y and the Millenials respond well to advertising that portrays authentic, unedited experience. A direct sales pitch would insult their media savvy. A GenX-style ironic posture (e.g., "Cavalier - the official car of Slack!") would seem too fussy to them.
