"Understanding Power", N. Chomsky, a series of Q&A between '88-present, gives a number of insights into the meanings of official policies.

The first 60 pages are all that any high-school or college level civics class need to debate the rest of their books, or what the average citizen needs to understand why the newspapers and politicians don't quite add up to reality.

Chomsky thinks progressives spend too much time considering criminal conspiracies of individuals, and should focus on the overall structure that is turning our gov't to concentrate on domestic propaganda and worldwide empire-building.

FWIW, he's a better man than I... IMO the criminal conspirators should be sent out of their bunkers, and the only solution to save democracy is realtime full disclosure of all public funds and official actions of public people. The kinds of structural rot and ethical contradictions will become clear and sort themselves out once fully exposed to the light of day to the American people.
