Enigma, Yes, unless you occupy and disarm the locals you will get attritive fire all the time. Hard to do. As for Anaconda, news management.
It is obvious that they attacked a place that was a lot stronger than they though at first. That is why so many enemy came and went at will in the early stages and probably when the Ben ladens left to leave their dog soldiers to die.
Places like that with caves etc, are the hardest to assault since they are full of natural defensive positions and behind them they just wait and shoot whoever shows himself. The well armed guys with flash blind grenades who went in at the point are brave indeed. True they had body armour and night vision goggles(3rd generation), so after the flash they can shoot the enemy who cannot yet see.
Still there are still mines and booby traps, Thankfully as long as you step on rock you can avoid most mines, but string pull booby traps are hard to see, even with night goggles if they use fine black nylon fishing line.
Do you have a link for the british journalists story?

You're right about the American technical strength, but there's a big question mark about their effectiveness as ground fighters,

Perhaps. Canadian snipers do provide ample cover and save hundreds of American lives.
