Pat: Thank you for you post. One part made me smile "Apparently some kind of canal will be built that will curtail cruises on the river in the future." The project to which you refer is the largest dam in the world and it is complete. The river will now be backed up into a lake which will submerge a rich part of China's cultural heritage -- it has been a very controversial project, but it provides power and is supposed to control floods that have killed thousands of people in the past.

Environmental issues are extremely important here. The Us contributes the most to global warming, but China's rapid industrializaton combined with out of date practices such as burning dirty coal for all kinds of reasons has created problems. I have to run to a conference now.
