British, Danish, and Swedish currencies did not convert to the Euro, but the countries do belong to the European Union (EU). Switzerland does not even belong to the EU. A lot of people do not know this; early last year someone at American Express told me I would have to convert my Swiss Franc travelers checks to Euros, or they would become worthless. Turned out there was nothing to this.

But the Swiss Franc has a lot less gold backing than it used to and is not linked to gold directly.
