If I were on a campus speaking committee, Pipes would be well at the end of the lists of possible speakers

That speaks volumes, John.

Not really, Bill, when you stop and think about it. Off the top of my head, I can think of three topics he might be able to talk about.

1. Islamism. I would suggest Doran on that topic well before Pipes. Looks to me he knows more, has a more flexible mind (that is, pays attention to nuances better), and my sources tell me he is a terrific speaker.

2. Middle Eastern studies issues. My campus did not have an ME department so you might be able, if the conditions were right, get 10 people to hear anyone talk on that topic. Not good.

3. Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I would go for the maximum educational input on this one and argue for rounding up enough dollars to get someone like Tom Friedman. Large audience so lots of folk would get up to speed. Pipes would be less expensive but also is known only within small circles so would not be an audience draw.
