Darren is is clear that the USA did not have local superiority in operation anaconda. This could come from an error in extimation. They think there are 200 in there and they find 2000, well, they will not be able to defeat them, so they are not able to control the flow of people in/out and loss of the top El-Quaeda people.
Had they not been well trained they may well have suffered a defeat at the hands of the El Quaeda in that operation. In the end they won, but only against those left to fight a rear guard action while the balance got away.
In a sense they suffered a strategic defeat, since the enemy was able to control the battle and come and go at will. The object was a trap, as a trap it failed.
