Canon does a much better job for the consumer segment.

Agree. Their pocketable toys impressed me on vacation, when I saw many get the most out of them, in terms of the bang for their hobbyist buck. Often felt like a fool with my giant brick of a 1D/28-70, when this toy for example would have done quite well instead:
