Hawkmoon,

I think it's because Ozone is not very stable, and therefore does not remain Ozone long enough to reach the upper stratoshpere. OTOH, CFC's are very stable and do not degrade very quickly at all, giving them plenty of time to reach high altitudes.

Isn't it something to wonder about if "scientists" are claiming that heavier than air CFCs can reach the upper stratosphere, yet man-made Ozone doesn't do exactly the same thing??

First of all, I do not like nor agree with your implication that these people are not real scientists, nor can I sympathise with the assumption that a basic question you (or Bill, or me) will come up with in two minutes will destroy the work of scientists in the field.

Second, ask and you shall receive the answer:

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are heavier than air, so how do scientists suppose that these chemicals reach the altitude of the ozone layer to adversely affect it?

Jean M. Andino (department of environmental engineering sciences at the University of Florida) and F. Sherwood Rowland (University of California at Irvine. He who won a Nobel Prize for his work on atmospheric chemistry) answer:

sciam.com

This is from Scientific American and the persons replying to your question are scientists.

The bottom line is that the scientific process is still uncertain

Some things are pretty clear, though. Or are you assuming that all these scientists are just conspiring against the US economy?

Science should not become politicized with researchers all out there making spurious claims in order to squeeze some more $$$$ out of Uncle Sugar by way of grants

So that's what you think is happening... Any real reason as to why you think scientists claim we are doing our atmosphere hellish harm with CFCs are lying to get grants?

(really...)
