Taiwan to approve TSMC's China plant soon-paper
Tuesday January 7, 11:31 pm ET

TAIPEI, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Taiwan is expected to approve top microchip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (TSMC) (NYSE:TSM - News; Taiwan:2330.TW - News) plan to build a factory in China soon, the Commercial Times reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper quoted Vice Premier Lin Hsin-i as saying in an interview that a committee under the economics ministry will consider the application by TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker.

"If there is no surprise, it should be approved soon," said Lin.

TSMC applied to the government in September to build a US$898 million plant in China, one of the world's fastest-growing markets, to become the first Taiwan semiconductor firm to take advantage of the deregulated investment rules.

The Taiwan government had said a decision on TSMC's application would be made before the Lunar New Year, which falls on February 1.

Responding to calls from the its semiconductor industry, Taiwan last year lifted longstanding barriers against investments in China, but disallowed the transfer of newer technology.

TSMC has said it expects the plant in Shanghai's Songjiang Science Park to be completed in four years.
