For the Bush administration, he says, the September 11 attacks were an act of war and an expression of evil. Europeans, who unreservedly condemned them, saw the attacks through a different lens: as the most extreme and reprehensible symptom of political dysfunction, operating from within failed states such as Afghanistan.

Alas.. from the files of "those who just don't get it" comes words from Mr. Solana..

This is more than just about "political dysfunction".. This is about whole societies and cultures adopting a culture of violent evil in which civilians blow both themselves and other civilians up..

It's about a perceiving one culture's worship of life as a military weakness to be exploited by their becoming worshippers of death...

Sure there's political dysfunction.. But that's no different than the world has experienced throughout the ages.. the haves exploiting the have nots.. But it's also about a group of haves trying to entice the have nots to sacrifice their lives for ideals which civilization cannot tolerate.

It's about warping entire societies from youth to be intolerant, brainwashed, religious automatons intent upon wiping out anyone who believes differently.

It's a cultural and societal infection that, if not stopped now, will become a global cancer curable only by major surgery or amputation, later on.. (at the cost of much blood on all sides).

It cannot be fought by moral relativism such as Mr. Solana wishes to display, anymore than Nazism, Communism, or Japanese Imperialism could have been during the past 50 years.

Imo, we are at a phase in this battle against Islamo-Fascism, which is comparable to the mid-1930s. We have an angry (and justifiably so) Muslim population which has been manipulated as pawns of illegitimate governments who practice only a "figurehead" form of democracy, at best.

And quite likely, as in Japan and Germany, it will require years of Western guidance and support to shape a world and future for the muslim baby boomers that offers them an alternative to Jihad.
