I wondered if this was a test of a new law that I think came into being a few months ago in the EU. It was an application of a previously existing German law, §140 StGB "Belohnung und Billigung von Straftaten" (approval of crimes): dejure.org The trial highlighted the sometimes difficult balance between granting freedom of speech and abolishing hate speech.
