The example is right in front of you but you are blinded by RWE ideology. Clinton and Republican Congress did eliminate the budget deficit and ran a budget surplus and the economy had outstanding growth. Budget deficits are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Where I am the public debt has been paid down aggressively

in the past decade or so. Although the currency appreciated only 25% against the dollar last year, the results have been very impressive. Credit ratings agencies have been crawling over each other to upgrade the sovereign debt.

'Pay down some debt' (though only a very small amount of the total): 1990s.

Run up government debt and live off the dole and the 'kindness of foreigners': 1980s.
