WLD, I would like to see gov't spending grow at a rate slower than the rate of the economy to ease the pain. Cut spending across the board to eliminate bickering. Social security started out with 16 workers to one beneficiary and people didn't live as long, now we are at 3 to 1 headed for 2/1 in 20? yrs. The numbers don't work. Defense spending - I don't think we need troops in 140 nations. I am all for reducing our role as the world's policeman - we make a lot of enemies in the process and get little thanks. I am not qualified to speak on medical issues but an interesting idea is to offer US citizenship to QUALIFIED foreign medical workers in exchange for providing health care at lower rates. If we leave problems for the future it will be that much more difficult. mike

>the three largest by far spending programs in the US are social security, medicare and defense.<

I think we as a society need to decide what we need and what we can afford to pay for while still growing at a satisfactory rate. We must stop thinking in terms of what we want.

I'm not giving you the answer here, just the formula.
