I for one didn't sell all my mutual fund positions at one time in 2000 because of taxes...doing so would have put me in the over 50% bracket instead of 25 to 28%. True the funds went down some more before I could sell in the following two years, but not as much as the taxes would have taken. Staying in a lower tax bracket does have some benefits.

"Not needing the money" may be a debatable point when the money is intended for retirement. We all need money then. Preserving and increasing that money is the name of the game.
