I was looking for an opportunity to re-establish my tough-guy credentials around here, so thanks for the opening... :0) I thought this piece was trash--and trash typical of a certain kind of lazy lefty political intellectual who is so smug and complacent that s/he doesn't even bother to listen to opposing views, let alone ponder them carefully. I can't believe I'm actually saying this--because I think he's generally been an obnoxious neanderthal blowhard for the last year-and-a-half--but I agreed with Andrew Sullivan's comments on the piece 100%. Take Didion's Israel fixation. Now one can certainly criticize the Sharon government for many of its policies (as I do), and even feel that the Israelis didn't go far enough or fast enough during the Oslo years to make sure every chance for a constructive outcome was seized (as I do). But there is a blithe assumption running right through the Didion piece that Israel, and America's support for Israel, is the dominant cause of trouble in the Middle East and Muslim world in general. This strikes me as so blinkered as to verge on covert, unacknowledged prejudice (altho I would not go so far as to diagnose such a condition on the basis of so small a sample). I suppose I was so ticked off by this piece's irresponsible see-no-evil warmed-over McGovernite gobbledygook precisely because I am a Democrat, and if forced to choose between Bush's and Didion's foreign policies would opt for the former in deep nose-holding frustration. Until the Democrats become the party of, oh, the Josh Marshalls of the world rather than Joan Didions, they don't deserve to be entrusted with the management of global hegemony... tb@there,Ifeelbetternow.com
