That is precisely the kind of tax calculation the folks at Treasury hate. People never will get it right in their opinion. Look for a quick and dirty approach to this.

OT It would be so much easier to just eliminate capital gains taxes altogether. Why should the government place a tax on every minor adjustment to my portfolio? That's just plain stupid IMO because it penalizes the mobility of capital.
