Most of the people you describe were, in fact, being faithful to the ideals they were taught, but had become convinced that the United States was woefully deficient in living up to its ideals. They were taught to respect all races, and yet saw the South offering massive resistance to integration, and the North pussyfooting around in dealing with it; they were taught that America was the land of opportunity, but began to fear that social classes were more rigid and unfair than they had assumed, and that the poor were largely exploited; they were taught that war was a great evil, and should be used sparingly for the best of ends, and found us mired in a seemingly endless war in alliance with a dubious regime, with a controversial genesis. The problem is, too many of their parents and leaders could not explain how reality and ideals related, and many young people lost confidence in them. Nevertheless, just as I said, more 18 year olds voted as their parents did than rebelled........
