I hope a mandatory national service act is implemented someday

I hope not. You are really advocating two years of Slavery, Hawkmoon. I did my time on a voluntary basis. I figured I would trade slavery for two years in Europe, and it was a good deal for me. The attraction of the concept, "It will make a man of you!" appeals to us "Old Farts", but I hope it never happens.

i concur, I spent time in the military during Nam. Went there because of the draft. I gained much more from the experience than any other experience in my life, except fatherhood.

i think that many areas could be exploited for national service, with the military being one option.

won't happen, but i'd be all for it! also agree that Rangell's motives are suspect, but the idea has merit

>>We all seemed to agree that there should be a mandatory service obligation for all US citizens at age 18. It could either be military service for 2 years (which educational benefits upon successful completion), Peace Corps, or a form of domestic CCC program where trained professionals, upon completion of college or training, are assigned to public works.<<

Only trouble is the "left" will scream its not fair to brainwash the young into military indoctrination...and the "right" will scream its not fair to brainwash the young Peace Corps members into helping the leftist rebels plant watercress in South America.

Hmmm...maybe seeing that all play out would be a great education for an eighteen year old after all.

Alas Hawk, I'm too libertarian for such an idea! ;)

I disagree. One of the reasons we have such a fine military today is because it's an all volunteer force. Forcing people into the service, would cause a bunch of dope smoking non motivating whiners to enlist.

I do agree that a person should receive good compensation such as the old G.I. bill for serving.

Would the world be a better place if Nobel prize winners took two years out of scientific research so they could build nature walks?

Would the world be a better place if Michael Jordan, Brittney Spears, Garth Brooks, and other professional athletes and entertainers took two years out of their careers so they could empty bed pans?

Would the world be a better place if Michael Dell, Steve Case, and all the other innovators and entrepreneurs took two years away from their careers to pick up trash along the roads?

My vote is no. One of the reason this country is so astonishing is that we don't hold our geniuses and superstars back.
