Despite Economic Downturn, Xilinx Moves Up Two Spots from Last Year, Ranking Higher Than Any Publicly Traded or High Technology Company

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FORTUNE Magazine announced this week that Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX - News) ranks No. 4 in the magazine's annual listing of "The Best 100 Companies to Work For," placing higher on this year's list than any other publicly traded or high technology company. For the third year in a row, Xilinx is on FORTUNE'S top 100 best companies list, moving up this year from No. 6 in 2002 and No. 14 in 2001. The 2003 ranking and related stories appear now at www.fortune.com and will appear in print in the January 20, 2003 issue, available on newsstands January 13.

"We're delighted to be included among such a stellar group of companies as a great place to work, something we consider a vital element of our long-term success at Xilinx," said Wim Roelandts, CEO of Xilinx. "Moving into the ranks of the top five this year is especially rewarding, given the challenges we've faced during the economic downturn. Challenging times call for shifts in priorities, but we've held steadfast to a core set of fundamental values upon which we've built the company to guide our decision-making."

"Xilinx employees are the true heroes in this," added Vice President of Human Resources Peg Wynn. "By fostering a 'spirit of ownership' inside our company, we've worked through the tough times -- even growing our business in the process -- while staying true to our goal to be a company that balances customer, shareholder and employee needs."

Xilinx is recognized on this year's list for protecting its employees from the high technology industry downturn by working closely with employees to come up with innovative cost-cutting measures to avoid layoffs, for instance, a sliding scale of pay cuts for everyone except the lowest paid personnel, while CEO Roelandts took a 20 percent pay cut.

In addition, Xilinx employees cited the company's long-standing commitment to local communities and support of grassroots community involvement among the reasons Xilinx is a great place to work. According to one representative comment in the employee survey, "This is a company that not only takes care of business, it also takes care of its people and its communities."

To select this year's FORTUNE best 100 companies list, the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco conducted an independent survey of a random sample of employees from 269 companies, selected from more than 1000 total candidates, to gather opinions about their workplaces. More than 40,000 responses were received, with nearly half of the employees providing additional written comments.
