Hi Dale, I owned a satellite share (Asia Satellite symbol SAT) long ago ...

They pay rich divvies, do not appreciate much, have not paid attention to them recently, and now, I am asking lawyer pals in TV business (they negotiate the transponder leasing terms) and money manager pals in China investment scheme for opinion (they can explain to me why not own anything and why buy anything else).

Stay tuned, as all are not reachable by phone this afternoon;0)

Chugs, Jay

Hello Dale, My facts are in concerning satellites, transponders, C-band, Ku-band, hot birds, foot prints, lease fees and all that good stuff.

ATS in NYSE is APT Satellite on HKSE.
Asia Satellite (SAT in NYSE) is ATS' competitor.

C-band accounts for majority of transponders on APT and SAT birds.

There is excess capacity on C-band which is used for TV due to three factors (a) switch from analog to digital broadcast, (b) new compression gizmo, and (c) China launched many new birds and are dropping price. So, general price level coming down. Efficiency is raised from 1 channel/1 transponder to 6-8 channels/transponder.

SAT charges a small premium over APT because (a) SAT is more professional, trusted, based in HK, has hotline to all major customers, thus no fade, glitch, and other annoying blibs.

APT is run from Beijing, is less technology responsible, but offers better price, and is improving.

More birds will be launched.

China space, electronic, and rocketry capability improving rapidly, i.e. man on moon in 24 months possible. Trust level increasing from customers.

You know the eventual story.

Chugs, Jay
