Nadine: Would it be a blessing in disguise if Sharon loses (or steps down) and Israel's Labor Party takes over...?

No way! Unless you think a terrorist state of Palestine, surviving only on handouts from the UN (read: you and me) and the Europeans (who plainly have no intention of pressuring Arafat, ever), whose only raison d'etre would be the destruction of Israel as they are incapable and uninterested in running a state, would be a blessing.

Maybe some fresh new leadership can find a way to build a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Which Palestinians, Fatah or Hamas? This lot are not interested in peace. They have fired up the ignorant (lots of the Palestinians are ignorant; the educated ones are mostly working in the US or Abu Dhabi or somewhere) for a suicidal 100 years anti-Crusade. Did you read the Avishai Margalit piece that John posted yesterday? There speaks someone who used to be a big peacenik, but is now moving towards realism.
