Sam -- My position is that all income should be taxed progressively. Many of the other taxes are political constructions to pick pockets silently and are regressive. I have mixed feelings about the sin tax, because they are designed to collect revenue and discourage socially and personally destructive behaviors. They are the most regressive of all taxes, however.

After writing my previous post, I remembered that my father put my brother and me thru college (we went to CCNY, which was free), and that, when I went to Northwestern for graduate work, he wanted to take another job to prevent me from working. He would get no tax relief for a second job. Therefore, I do take it personally when people seem cavalier about taxing wages.( BTW, I did get a fellowship so neither had to work).

The Casino at Monaco foots the bill. They cheated me there and I have never been screwed in a more elegant place!

Seriously, can you tell me whether and how VAT applies when you make purchases online from vendors in other countries.

Not sure I can. I know quite a bit about getting VAT returns when I go on shopping sprees in other countries, but I don't know how (or whether) it applies to online purchases.

We have a lot of VAT here. And none of it is refundable (is that the word?). But we don't have any personal income tax. Fa fa fa! <g>
