Translation for you of Neo's post, Shep: 25% of the FBI's drop in crime was because of a huge drop in NY crime. Rudy did it. He followed this guy named James Q. Wilson. Wilson said that taking care of the liddle messes would make fokes think twice before they made big messes. So, Rudy got rid of them danged guys who stand at traffic lights and mess up ya cah-winda wantin' to clean it for a dang dolla. Rudy did a lotta stuff like this and fokes felt it helped make stuff betta. Rudy also made cops feel happier and stuff. Ni sho, some people argue about how much this stuff helped, but most fokes know dang well it DEFINEY helped. Since otha Republicans did like Rudy, Rudy be da bomb maaan.

Broken windows, my tush...Yes, there were and are all kinds of reasons cited for the decreasing crime rates all across the country with all sorts of people taking credit for them.. The facts are that no one knows for sure what the real cause was. If Rudy is the reason NYC's rate came down then why did Seattle and LA's and dozens of other cities came down at the same time. I further stated to you that crime in NYC peaked in 1990, 4 years before Rudy appeared on the scene. See: 149.101.22.40 The same is true nationally. See: washtimes.com The fact that the article you cite only talks about the Rudy years suggests a spin. What caused the crime reduction the previous 4 years? William Bratton, the Police Commissioner for a couple of the Rudy years, has been running around the country claiming credit also. I do give Rudy credit for improving "quality of life" issues such as vagrants and squeegee men, but I think there were other major forces at work that reduced national crime. My guesses are the improving economy and the fading out of the crack fad.... So if you are looking to award someone for falling crime rates, it would have to be on the national level and that man is none other than Bill Clinton except he didn't come on the scene until 1992....
