To: Rob Fritz who wrote (213662 ) 1/10/2003 11:26:38 AM From: reaper Respond to of 436258 Rob, i guess the point is that Perez 'came through' in the first inning, and in the 6th, and also in the 9th. he did not hit any better in 'clutch' situations than he did in just regular situations. it just seems like he's 'clutch' because by virtue of being a very good hitter he happened to get a lot of hits with games on the line. but he also got a lot of hits with nobody on in the 2nd inning. and you know what, he made a lot of outs too, and you don't remember those. on Theo Epstein, the new Sox GM -- i think he's great. Giambi was a brilliant trade, i like the Walker signing (i think platooned with Lou Merloni that'll make a great and productive 2B combo), and i positively LOVE the 'bullpen by committee' approach (this has been discussed ad nauseum on CFZ-e, especially during the playoffs and the world series, but i think it is the height of stupidity to save your best reliever for the 9th inning when there are crucial outs to get in the 7th inning, and i also think its stupid to pay a guy $7-8mm a year to pitch 70 innings). i'm disappointed he hasn't been able to pry Colon away from Montreal, but the fact is that all we really have to deal is Hillebrand and people are starting to wise up that he's not that good (he doesn't walk at all). the true test for Theo will come in a couple of years though, when all of Garciappara, Pedro, Jason Varitek, and Derek Lowe come up for contract re-signing. it'll be interesting to see who he keeps and who he doesn't, and how he manages the roster between now and then 'cause i don't think there's any way we can keep them all. (fwiw, i think Pedro goes). Cheers
