It's meaningless to talk of Ellison's payday if the company were privately held, since he couldn't have gotten it in that case. And as I've said many times, I disagree that stockholders' equity is a meaningful measure of the value of this company. So if I had held Oracle stock since 1991, I would be evaluating Ellison's payday in terms of the increase in stock price during that period, and would have been satisfied. And if the stock doesn't get over 40 again before Ellison retires (or in 10 years), then he won't have been paid anything for a period of 4 years.

I understand your analysis, I just don't happen to agree with it. And I'm sure that the converse is true.
