Many of the tribes the Europeans encountered were quite recent immigrants. The Sioux for example, who used to be riverine valley horticulturalists prior to ~1750AD. The arrival of the horse into the Northern Plains and their adoption by the natives transformed the culture into nomadic buffalo hunters. The increase in mobility and steady diet allowed them to move into and dominate the Dakotas in the late 18th century. They "owned" the land for about 100 years before Wounded Knee.
