Jim: Thanks. As for what will happen this spring, summer and fall in Chine re: "3 G" approval and then installation - its timetable and scope - including what seems to be (reading the tea leaves) 1x EVDO in China Unicom's case is speculation as of today - agreed.

My view is that China Unicom seems to intend to move the entire CDMA 2000 system to include 1x EVDO as soon as possible and practical. Whether that explicitly or permissively includes 1x EVDO in phase 3, is not yet clear IMO - but I am speculating yes. We will know more in time.

As for Verizon and Sprint, the problem is that they are the key CDMA horses in the US race and we are stuck with that with their old line telecom history and management - unless or until NextWave can enter - the Supreme Court and the FCC permitting. Remember NextWave has options if it can move forward, and we are not sure what shape any NextWave entry might take. That ranges from a sale of spectrum to Verizon and or others to operating its own free standing system as a wholesaler or retailer - or a partnership of some sort, or some combination of these - or????. (And NextWave may have no opportunity for anything at all if cut off at the knees by either the Supreme Court or FCC.)

Best.

Jim & gdichaz,

re Jim "didn’t read Ramsey’s article to indicate phase 3 was going to be 1x EV-DO."

Jim is correct, according to QCOM presentation by VP & Treasurer Richard Grannis. See slide 12 of qualcomm.com

Phase 3 in my earlier post should have said 2.5G and 1x .. NOT 3G and "1xEV-DO(?)". My "(?)" was there since I was unsure. Sorry about that.

I wonder if either phase 2 or 3 upgraded the 15 million lines of phase 1 to 1x.
