Canada’s October Polished Exports Up 163 Percent By Peter C. Mastrosimone Posted: 1/7/2003 (Rapaport…January 7, 2003) Canada’s polished exports increased 162.6 percent in October to approximately $2.6 million, according to figures provided by Statistics Canada, a government agency. Measured by weight, polished exports increased 285.6 percent to 1,149 carats. For the first 10 months of 2002, polished exports were up 50.3 percent to $22.2 million. By weight they were up 46.6 percent to 10,199 carats. October polished imports increased 120.3 percent to $18.4 million. By weight they rose 88.8 percent to 33,687 carats. For the year to date, polished imports were up 53 percent to $176.5 million. By weight they were up 40.7 percent to 359,079 carats. Statistics Canada is unable to separate all rough diamond import and export figures from industrial diamond figures. The government reports an “unsorted” category of rough diamonds which includes both gemstones and industrial diamonds. October’s combined rough and unsorted exports increased 2,628.2 percent to $601,734. By weight they rose 399.3 percent to 1,201 carats. Year-to-date rough and unsorted exports were up 9.5 percent to $428.6 million. By weight they were up 56.2 percent to 4 million carats. October rough and unsorted imports fell 92.6 percent to $445,191. For the year to date, they were down 60 percent to $16 million. Comparisons with 2001 by weight were not possible because caratage was not recorded for rough and unsorted imports until 2002.
