I could also argue that the concept of separation of church and state supports the idea that the state can't tax the church as the taxation causes the church to be less separated however the "separation of church and state" is not actually in the constitution. I think either the above argument or your argument that taxation amounts to prohibiting the free exercise of religion would, as a court decision, amount to judicial activism.
