I think you have a problem analogous to the commerce cases if you had such incredibly important laws varying from state to state. Why should a homosexual in California be entitled to have the protection of the law for a same sex union, when a citizen of another state did not? Homosexuals would not want to take jobs in those states- you'd effectively be restricting them to certain states- is that something you are really comfortable with?

Then when you look at abortion, if abortion were banned in some states you'd set up a system where the rich could get abortions by going out of state but the poor could not. As a liberal I see very little point in legislating anything but minimal morality. On most issues, I'd like to see people be able to follow their own consciences, as long as they aren't following their own consciences on a path that leads to interfering with other people.
