Paul, A lot of old copper wire, from lines laid in the 30's and 40's has an economically recoverable amount of gold in it at current gold prices. Quite a lot of gold and other metals is scavenged from the electro-refining cells this way.
In fact it pay all the costs to remove and lay new cable for such lines. Modenr line either use Aluminum or copper with very little dissolved gold.

Quebec did a lot of this over the past 15 years.
