Technology and information are irreversible, so unless we fail to protect ourselves against some form of global mass-destruction ushering in a new Dark Ages, an American decline would simply be an opportunity for other state and multinationals.

IMO the real power on the planet has yet to make itself known -- the American consumer. More than military power, informed action by the American consumer could for China to observe human rights, or, say, topple terrorist-supporters like Saudi Arabia. That would happen with direct information at point-of-sale, such as messages on gas pumps, "0% of this fuel is from terrorist-supporting countries such as Saudi Arabia".

You'd have lines around the block, and frantic Saudis on the tube trying to prove to Americans how honest they are... LOL!
