Some think this blanket clemency is to take the Feds investigating him off the front page. Early in his term he did allow an execution of a guy who was convicted on some very iffy evidence.

Ryan is no Clintonite and he is far from crazy. It is hard to discern his true motivation on this issue. As Ish pointed out, it does get his legal troubles off of the front page for a while, though not for long. The U.S. Attorney has actually brought two of his children before a grand jury. That should give you an idea as to how hard they are pursuing him.

It could be about legacy. What will he be remembered for? Clemency or just another corrupt politician. If his considerations are that cynical, I hope that he rots in hell. This process has been an ongoing circus in Illinois and he has caused a lot of grief to the families of a lot of the victims.

Maybe he is working out some sort of penance for the six kids that died in that accident.
