There is (imo) nothing more selfish than reproduction. People who are in love with themselves are often in love with the idea of leaving little copies of themselves for the future. It sustains them in the face of death. They will die but they will leave a bit of themselves behind in their children. Shakespeare was absolutely obsessed with the idea, and so are many other people (he went on and on about how horrible women were if they wouldn't have babies and leave the world copies- probably because he had trouble getting women into bed). You have to be a rather noble individual, imo, to be a part of society and work and contribute, even though you have no offspring that will benefit in the future.
