My daughter works for a local store of a national chain of department stores and her tale made me just shake my head in disgust. Among her other duties as an assistant manager is supervision of the customer service dept, including returns and refunds. She has seen people shoplift items from her store and get away before security can apprehend the culprit. About an hour or two later, the same person comes back and wants a refund for the stlen merchandise, clothing, toys or whatever. She automatically gives them the money refund, even though they don't have a receipt. This policy is the result of her job being on the line because her company policy is to avoid lawsuits at all costs, even to giving refunds for merchandise her company does not even sell like competitor's brand name stuff, ie JC Penny and others. The result is that the store will not back her up when the customer disputes the turn down of credit. In one case she even showed her manager a security tape of the perp stealing a coat and bringing it back an hour later. "The customer is always right - we need to get market share" at all costs. You can imagine the effect this has on morale and attitude not only at this company, but any subsequent employment. And it's not just this company, either. She tells me it is more common than not in her industry (retail merchandising) and others as well. They figure that giving away $20,000 per month is a drop in the bucket compared to $2,000,000+ per month in sales. And so it goes; The scum shall inherit the Earth from decent people who are forced to allow their crap to continue, and f**k anyone who calls them on their miscreant behavior I expect shoplifting for fun and profit will become another "ambulance chaser" speciality for lawyers. "Are you a thief? Do you get caught shoplifting? Not to worry! Call Dewey, Cheatum and Howe. We specialize in intimidating gutless companies from whom you have "acquired" goods at a 100% discount. Hey, you're entitled to a living, too. Chas -Totally tired of scumbags.
