Actually his Democratic opponent would have followed Republican policy better. Ryan raised taxes and one of the first things he did was take money from the bridge repair fund to pay for a recreation hall and parade for homosexuals in Chicago.

He had been Secretary of State and ran as a Republican to ride Edgar's long coat tails. I think the only reason he ran for Governor was it has a higher pension than Secretary of State.
