CB, it's true that the knowledge of how to build an onager is still around and there are onager clubs for fun. But as with onagers, obsolescence will put paid to nuclear weapons. The fact that they can be built, doesn't mean that they will. They will become a solution looking for a problem, which is not a great marketing concept for an inventor. Major Paradigm Shift Happens. The idea that the world will continue the millennia-old [and eons-old] alpha male based, tribal territoriality and genocidal warfare is being rapidly overtaken by events, despite rearguard actions around the world. It's true that even now, raw power on a nationalistic and often simple tribal basis, remains the main form of power resolution among nations. But already, there are models which have worked for a century which don't involve determination by who wins a fight. Such as, for example, the federation of the states making up the United States of America. Suppose the rest of the world didn't exist, you would be able to see that such a model can exist and that the peace is not kept between the various states by Colorado holding California at bay by Weapons of Mass Destruction. There is a different paradigm used to manage the relationships. It has been very successful since the civil war and the empire building phase when the aborigines were usurped, conquered and the survivors subsumed and used as breeding stock to provide female answer syndrome in Silicon Investor. A less tightly associated federal system would no doubt work as efficaciously for a global scale United States of Freedom. Just as we look at Maori hilltop fortifications and European castles as quaint artifacts of a barbarous past based on territorial alpha male tribal dominance, I think it won't be many decades before the 20th century mayhem is looked at as a ghastly similar chunk of history. The population drops which are now underway on a global scale, the mixing of populations, the globalisation and other integrating factors will make geopolitical wars of conquest and territorial acquisition an absurdity. The drivers of the old time wars have been disappearing, the biggest driver being ruined by the fertility control women around the world have gained, which they are choosing to use to limit their breeding to less than replacement rates - dramatically less than replacement rate.
