I'd say Rummy is probably closer to being right than Hackworth.

Hack? Best Battalion Commander, either side, Vietnam war. A great Soldier. I would hire him to run any Military Op up to Division level. And a good critic of what is wrong with Military Personnel promotion practices. But he is "Round the Bend" on the ME, IMO.

CB, Hackworth is primarily mad because he was passed over for promotion too often and had to retire, IMHO. I read the article, and emailed him a response to which he politely replied. My thought was that Rumsfeld could hardly NOT say what he said about a two front war, in the light of the N. Korean response in 1950 to the statement by the Sec of State that Korea was not a strategic interest of the US. That got us more than 50,000 KIA. So score one for Rummy on this.

"BTW, I formed my less than favorable opinion about Hackworth months ago. He's squarely in the age-old tradition of blue-collar workers hating and fearing people who sit at desks."
