They hoped to get the China market with it but Qualcomm got Unicom to use BREW instead

Unicom has signed multiple partnerships in this area, including one with QCOM for BREW, SK Mobile's Java-based NATE platform(more broadly just SKM's experience in Java), Sun Micro, and ACCESS's IMAP for MMS. It is not clear exactly where they are headed, IMO.

They don't seem to really be pushing them. If I go to their site, as I have done, I wouldn't even know they exist. From the point of view of a naive user, which I essentially am, I prefer the layout of the applications on the Verizon site.

You bring up a good point....one advantage "Get it Now" has is its simplicity. The hacked together programs require some initiative on the part of the customer to access. Word of mouth may eventually get to the "average" customer's attention.....but I doubt they will generally go out of their own way to find what is available.

There may be many more JAVA applications but I would be surprised to hear that they are generating much in the way of data ARPU at Sprint simply because they aren't marketing them much. Verizon at least has some things which are not ringers, games or pictures in their "get going" category. They at least are clearly preparing the user for the GPS based services like Navitime BREW that KDDI uses.

The most frustrating part of this argument is that Verizon has refused to give any concrete numbers on how well BREW is performing. The graph that shows the number of applications download doubling each month is meaningless without knowing the number of deployed BREW handsets for each month. If we dont get some numbers at the next CC, I am going to have to start to assume that BREW isnt doing as well as expected. They are looking to IPO Verizon Wireless and nothing would help their valuation more than a substantial data ARPU.
