(COMTEX) B: Greek PM calls for broader, stronger EU
B: Greek PM calls for broader, stronger EU

ATHENS, Jan 13, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis
on Monday called for building a "broader, better and stronger" Europe.

Simitis, head of government of the country holding the current rotating EU
presidency, made the call in his message to EU citizens, which was translated in
the languages of all 25 EU member-states and accession-states.

In the message, he called for building a broader, better and stronger Europe. "A
broader Europe with the accession of the 10 new states that have concluded
relative negotiations, followed by the accession of all the other states that
will also complete negotiations and meet required political and economic
accession criteria," he said.

Simitis said a strong Europe should be active in the regional and the
international system, it should be a factor of peace, stability and sustainable
growth for all.

The first half of 2003 will be a historic landmark for Europe, Simitis said.

On April 16, the Accession Act for 10 new states in the European Union will be
signed in Athens, which then will increase its membership from 15 to 25 member
states.
