I'm not sure that an individual, guilty or not, fighting to keep from being executed is proof that the death penalty is a deterrent where society-at-large is concerned. It may be, but I fail to see the logical connection there.

And if it wasn't a deterrent, why do defense lawyers regularly negotiate for life in prison during plea bargains?

Deterrence can be measured in many ways.
